Introduction to Stone Setting
The Introduction to Stone Setting course is for jewellers looking to launch themselves into the world of stone setting, beginning with some entry-level techniques. The step up from jeweller to setter is still a leap, but one that is most definitely within your reach.
Can I do this class?
Have you got the skills to create your jewellery but are fed up either outsourcing your setting work or avoiding those pretty little stones altogether? Then this is for you!
But please note that you need to have a good understanding of jewellery making. Knowledge of basic jewellery techniques is required. Skills such as soldering, filing and saw piercing are essential to take this course. This is for people with little, basic or no knowledge of stone setting skills. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Day 1: Bezel Setting
- Setting a round stone into pre-formed tube
- Learn to create a bezel setting for a cabochon stone, solder onto a backplate & set the stone
- Build and set a heavy slider pendant to hang on a chain
Day 2: Claw Setting
- Create and set a scalloped claw setting from tapered tube for a round stone
- Build and set a four-claw double-gallery setting for a round stone
- Unseating the stone
From attending both days consecutively, you will come away with a fantastic understanding of basic stone setting that will lead to the further development of your designs and technical ability. You will be shown all the necessary methods to harness the techniques, however, please be aware that a certain amount of continual repetition will be required post-class to hone the skills. Practice makes perfect!
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring a sketchbook or similar for taking notes. Please note that glasses/optivisors are very much advised for this class [get in touch if you’re unsure]. Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.
Scott will provide all materials, which include metal and stones. You will each have your own bench where we have access to all essential stone setting tools but do feel free to bring your own if you are more comfortable.
The course is held at our large , well equipped workshop above Siop iard in the centre of Caernarfon.
*Please note that lunch and parking costs are at your own cost*
